SUMMARY:
The purpose of this position is to protect life and property, assist victims of violent crimes, apprehend criminals, prevent crime, and enforce state laws, and local ordinances. This is accomplished by responding to 911 calls for service, gathering information, investigating traffic accidents, arresting subjects, patrolling the City, assessing the needs of victims and providing appropriate resources, and establishing a relationship with businesses and citizens.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responds to 911 calls for service by acknowledging the dispatch; assessing the response priority; driving to the location; contacting victims, complainants, and witnesses; gathering information to determine if a crime has been committed; requesting additional resources if needed; arresting subjects if appropriate; and completing incident reports.
Conducts preliminary basic investigations by responding to incident locations; determining the type of incident; locating and identifying complainants, victims, and witnesses; identifying possible suspects; recording information; collecting and submitting evidence; completing the incident report; and obtaining warrants for suspects.
Performs self-initiated patrol activities by actively looking for violations of state statutes, traffic laws, and City ordinances; enforcing traffic laws through traffic stops; contacting residents and business owners to identify quality of life issues; following up with citizens about prior complaints; conducting property checks; serving subpoenas and warrants; and making referrals to the appropriate City/County agency when appropriate.
Conducts traffic accident investigations by responding to the accident location; checking for injuries; clearing the roadway; interviewing involved parties and witnesses; completing reports; issuing traffic citations; following up with any injured parties at the medical facility; and securing the scene if required.
Appears in Court by complying with scheduled court dates; answering subpoenas to appear on days other than regularly scheduled dates; reviewing reports and notes; testifying; discussing the case with an assigned attorney as appropriate; and assisting in contacting witnesses and serving subpoenas.
Maintains weapons and protective equipment by inspecting all equipment and weapons to ensure proper operation; managing supply and material inventories; placing orders; and inspecting assigned vehicles.
Provides a high level of customer service with a pro-active approach through the use of tact and diplomacy as a steward of the City.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors; to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; and to follow verbal and written instructions. Maintains the absolute confidentiality of all records and information while still complying with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
Responsible for all prescribed safety rules and regulations. Maintains the absolute confidentiality of all records and information while still complying with the Texas Public Information Act.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Reports to work free from effects of drugs/controlled substances and/or alcohol, and free from the impairment due to prescription drugs.
Is punctual and maintains regular attendance.
The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime including during emergencies (defined as any natural or man-made disaster that may or may not necessitate the relocation of City personnel or citizens). In the event of an emergency and/or a required evacuation, the incumbent may be required to remain at work to provide needed services or perform essential duties for the benefit of the general public including services or duties different from those performed in the normal course and scope of the position.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The position requires a broad knowledge of the law enforcement field. Knowledge is normally acquired with at least three (3) years of experience in law enforcement.
High school graduate or GED required.
Requires Basic Peace Officers license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Intermediate Certification preferred.
Valid Texas Class C Driver’s license with clear driving record.
National Incident Command System (NIMS) ISO 100 (Introduction to Incident Command System) and 700 (Introduction to National Incident Management Systems) are required.

Must be sufficiently agile to go from an extended seated position to standing or running position with ease.
Must be able to observe catastrophic events and still perform your duties effectively.
Must be able to work extended hours without breaks.
Be able to work in extreme weather conditions in assigned required duty attire.
