THE POSITION
The City of Aledo is currently seeking a Public Works Maintenance Operator. This role is essential for ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the city's drinking water system, wastewater and stormwater collection systems, which directly impacts the health of the community. It contributes to citywide operations by assisting in emergency responses and collaborating across departments to uphold infrastructure reliability and foster community trust.
Under the general direction of the Public Works Lead Operator, the Public Works Maintenance Operator is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing the City’s water system, wastewater collection and stormwater systems as well as city streets and parks ensuring regulatory compliance, infrastructure reliability, and public safety through daily monitoring, equipment upkeep, and support of citywide operations and emergency response efforts

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Water Treatment Operations
- Conducts daily readings for wells and the Aledo Pump Station, including chlorine residual testing for wells and daily residential addresses and performs daily monitoring of water treatment systems to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.
- Conducts monthly Coliform testing in accordance with TCEQ regulations.
- Maintains and lubricates pumps, motors, and equipment at well facilities; calibrates gauges, meters, and controls; and completes general repairs as needed. Reports equipment and machinery issues to the supervisor and performs corrective maintenance.
- Responsible for maintaining a clean and functional environment by cleaning, painting, and preserving structures, tanks, buildings, and surrounding grounds to ensure safe and efficient water treatment operations.
Other Duties
- Operates and maintains a variety of equipment—including trucks, heavy machinery, and landscaping tools—by performing daily inspections, preventive maintenance, and completing tasks using proper materials and methods in line with established procedures.
- Completes daily work orders, including service connections and disconnections due to non-payment.
- Provides on-call support for City operations, assists with emergency response efforts, and helps set up and support special events and community activities.
- May perform additional duties assisting other departments with similar tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of water disinfection operations, water distribution, and wastewater collection systems, street repair or shows the ability to learn these systems quickly and effectively.
- Knowledge of proper maintenance procedures and adheres to safety protocols to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety.
- Knowledge of the city’s layout, including major streets, neighborhoods, landmarks, and infrastructure zones or the ability to learn this quickly.
- Ability to safely and efficiently use a wide range of tools and machinery, including drills, saws, jackhammers, backhoes, and trenchers.
- Ability to adhere to departmental safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard communication, confined space entry, and traffic control measures.
- Ability to make quick, informed decisions that prioritize safety, minimize risk, and ensure effective resolution of emergencies or operational disruptions.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with residents, staff, and elected officials.
- Ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues through a collaborative and team-oriented approach.
- Demonstrates strong attention to detail, seeks clarification when necessary, and consistently delivers accurate and efficient work

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT
The employee must have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull greater than 50 pounds, and may require infrequent lifting of greater than 100 pounds. This position is exposed to extreme elements including extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise intensity level, moving mechanical parts/hazards, dirt/dust, and odors. Constant use of Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to: footwear, eyewear, and the use of reflective clothing is required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Class D Water license within 12 months, and Class C within 24 month of hire.
- Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
PREFERRED:
- One year of utility experience performing manual labor preferred.
