Police Sergeant Investigator ($60,500 with 16 paid holidays - $27.44 per hour)
(Up to an additional $5,000 annualized with stipend or higher education pay)
DEFINITION
Under direction of the Police Chief, the Police Sergeant Investigator is expected to perform law enforcement work; to perform comprehensive criminal investigation work; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; and to do related work as required. The Sergeant Investigator is expected to act in the capacity of an Operations Commander, performing supervisory responsibilities in the absence of, or at the direction of, the Police Chief. The Sergeant Investigator is expected to perform field supervision of patrol activities, supervise and personally perform investigative work and perform assigned administrative activities in carrying out the direction of the Chief of Police.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Sergeant Investigator supervises Officers and adheres to all directives given by the Chief of Police. The Sergeant Investigator performs a full range of supervisory and training activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Available to answer phone calls from subordinate Officers 24/7/365 and relay pertinent information to the Chief of Police
Available to be on call 24/7/365
Assist in the creation of Police schedule
Patrol assigned areas in cars or on foot
Conduct background investigations
Follow-up on any Felony or Misdemeanor case that warrants further investigation
Review reports submitted by patrol officers and suggest corrections as needed
Write and serve warrants (Arrest, Search, etc.) and subpoenas
Investigate criminal acts such as homicides, sexual assaults, armed robberies, and property crimes such as thefts/burglaries.
Collect and use forensic evidence to solve crimes.
Interview informants, suspects, and witnesses to ascertain alibis, clues, time frames, and possible suspects.
Keep detailed records.
Answers calls for the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of City, County, and State laws
Conducts thorough investigations of all criminal activity, vehicle accidents, and the enforcement of City, County, and State laws
Directs traffic, including regulation of traffic flow at times of emergency or congestion
Stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of the law
Warns drivers against unlawful practices and issues citations and makes arrests as required
Receives calls from and assists other law enforcement agencies in emergencies
May perform duties in other areas of the Police Department, when called upon to do so
Attention to detail and ensure accuracy of work
Handle stress effectively without it interfering with performance
Working effectively and timely to analyze and resolve issues
Operation and use of tools and equipment used in the department
Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees
Exercise sound, independent judgment within established guidelines
Express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Delegate work to employees in a lower classification
Act effectively in emergency and stressful situations by using good judgment, self-discipline and courtesy
Utilize modern police techniques and practices in law enforcement, investigations, crime, and
accident prevention
Utilize principles and practices of personnel supervision and management
Know department policies, rules and procedures
Attend scheduled staff meetings
Perform other related duties as required
Review reports of subordinates for accuracy and completeness
The Sergeant oversees the patrol and law enforcement activities during an assigned shift
Maintains discipline and ensures that Department rules and policies are followed
Conduct thorough follow-up investigations, including the routine gathering of evidence, questioning of witnesses, and apprehension of suspects
Participates in all normal patrol activities when needed, including enforcing local and State laws, issuing citations, making arrests, administering first aid, and transporting prisoners
Assists Officers in preparing reports in cases for trial and may personally appear in court to present evidence testimony
Gives information and direction to the public
Conducts in-service training and writes reports of performance for Officer(s) on Shift
Prepare reports of shift activity
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Of:
Modern police methods and procedures, including patrol, investigations, crime prevention, and traffic control
Criminal law, with particular emphasis on apprehension, arrest, and investigation of persons accused of misdemeanors and felonies
Rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the preservation and presentation of evidence in Court
Criminal investigation techniques and procedures, including crime scene investigation, interrogation, fingerprinting and photography
Recent Court decisions on arrest procedures and the handling of suspects and prisoners
Principles of supervision and training
Use and care of firearms
Ability To:
Gather, assemble, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence
Draw logical conclusions from information and make proper recommendations
Interpret and apply laws and regulations
Analyze situations quickly and accurately, and take effective courses of action
Schedule, organize, and supervise the work of subordinates
Demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory
Meet established standards of physical endurance, agility, and vision
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Preferred Experience:
Law Enforcement experience (investigations experience preferred) and previous public safety/first responder related supervisory experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Maintain physical ability and stamina to meet police and safety standards to include: See well enough to drive vehicles under emergency conditions, make valid identifications, use firearms, detect hazardous situations, write legible reports; Hears and speak well enough to converse on the radio, telephone and in person over incident noise, to be alert to situations of danger; bodily mobility to make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods, stamina and endurance necessary in the apprehension of combative suspects, use of hands and fingers to write, to utilize safety gear, and drive vehicles under emergency conditions; ability to distinguish hazardous odors; must be able to lift equipment as necessary
